LAKE CITY - Construction to expand and remodel the Emergency Department at Mayo Clinic Health System is scheduled to begin in the coming months and will be managed by Weis Builders of Rochester. The $1.1 million investment will improve the overall patient experience and enhance patient and staff safety.
Weis Builders, which built the Lake City facility in 1999, has continued to be involved in numerous projects in the ensuing year. 17 years. MCHS officials noted that the experienced team that is not only familiar with the Lake City site and staff but with the community as well.
"The expansion and remodel of our ED will improve our capacity to care for more patients," said Dr. Brian Whited, CEO of Mayo Clinic Health System in Cannon Falls, Lake City and Red Wing. "Patients and staff will benefit from improved space functionality, privacy and safety."
Some highlights of the remodeling project in Lake City include:
• Four private treatment rooms to allow staff to safely and privately care for multiple patients. Currently, the facility has one private and two curtained treatment spaces.
• A safe room for patients who are experiencing a mental health crisis.
• Larger waiting space made available for family and friends of patients during ED visits, along with access to a private counseling room.
"Mayo Clinic Health System continues to be committed to its staff, patients and the Lake City community. There is a growing demand for Emergency Department services in Lake City and while our staff provides excellent care, the physical space no longer meets the need," Whited said.
Weis Builders is reviewing subcontracting bids and plans to begin construction late spring or early summer.
