School District 833 will be holding its seventh annual food drive "The Great Act of Kindness Campaign" March 9 to 13 to help local families in need.

Each building/site has a campaign representative and has been assigned one or two items to collect for two local food shelves -- Friends in Need in St. Paul Park and Christian Cupboard in Woodbury.

In Minnesota, nearly half of the hungry who visit food shelves are children. Hungry kids have difficulty learning, more medical problems and higher absenteeism than children with adequate nourishment.

Last year, District 833 students and staff collected 15,000 items and $4,300 in cash. The district hopes to surpass those totals this year.

During March, Minnesota FoodShare month, a portion of donations collected will be matched by corporate sponsors.

This year's campaign co-chairs are Jean Aimonetti, Theresa Campbell and Fran Fate.
