Mark Campbell sat in a Pierce County courtroom Tuesday hoping that this sentencing hearing would go better than the first.
Campbell, 38, River Falls, was sentenced to 30 years prison in Feb. 2008 for first-degree sexual assault of a child. A District III Court of Appeals ordered the case to be resentenced in May after stating that Judge Robert Wing should have considered state guidelines before sentencing and say that for the record. Wing sentenced Campbell to 30 years prison and 10 years extended supervision.
Pepin/Buffalo Circuit Court Judge James Duvall presided over Tuesday's hearing and ordered an even harsher sentence - 34 years confinement and 10 years extended supervision. He will be 72 when he gets out of prison.
"There's no doubt in my mind you had intercourse with the victim," Duvall said, talking to Campbell. "You are 100 percent to blame for what you did to that child. There's very little hope of providing restitution to the victim because you violated her trust."
Authorities arrested Campbell in his River Falls apartment back in March 2007 after relatives alerted them to what was going on. The criminal complaint stated that victim told investigators Campbell had sex with her, masturbated in front of her, used various sex toys with her, and exposed her to DVD and video porn movies and magazines.
Besides sexual assault of child, Campbell was originally charged with incest, exposing child to harmful materials and causing children under 13 to view/listen to sexual activities. Those charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
