LITTLE FALLS, Minn. -- Grief counselors are in central Minnesota as classes for high schoolers resume today in Little Falls and Pillager. Two area students, 17-year-old Nicholas Brady and 18-year-old Haile Kifer, were shot to death on Thanksgiving Day.
Sixty-four-year-old Byron Smith is charged in their deaths but his best friend, John Lang, says you have a right to defend your home. He said his friend "has been through hell and it should have never came to this point." However, prosecutors say Smith went beyond the law when he shot the teens several times and then didn't call authorities immediately.
Morrison County Sheriff Mike Wetzel says Smith told them he didn't call authorities right away because "it was Thanksgiving and he didn't want to bother police on a holiday". Smith's next court date has not been set.
