The Farmington 16-and-under girls fastpitch softball team coached by

Erik Bonhoff posted a 4-1-1 record and finished second in the 32-team

St. Paul Harding Invitational June 10-11 to earn qualifying bids for

two national tournaments.

The high finish earned the girls either a trip to the Amateur

Softball Association of America or American Fastpitch Association

national tournaments to be held later this summer. The ASA tournament

will be played in Phoenix, Ariz. and the AFA nationals in Rockford,


Farmington beat Spring Lake Park 5-4 and North St. Paul 1-0 and

forged a 4-4 tie with Hopkins in Saturday's pool play to advance to

the championship round.

In Sunday's final round the locals posted back-to-back 2-1 wins over

Eagan and North Area before dropping a 1-0 verdict to Mounds View in

the title game.

Mal Betzold and Kaitlyn Kalmes handled the pitching chores with

Betzold carrying most of the work load. The hard-throwing lefthander

allowed just three runs in 34 innings in the circle.

Betzold, Chelsea Thompson, Ashlee Brink, Kelsey Lyons and Paige

Marshall swung the big sticks for the Farmington nine. Erin Johnson

produced the most dramatic hit of the tournament, a game-winning home

run in the victory over Eagan.
