A 35-year-old Farmington man is in jail this week, facing charges he carried on long-term relationship with a 16-year-old girl.
Police received a report Feb. 6 that Adam Walter Bentz had on several occasions had inappropriate contact with the girl, described in a criminal complaint as having a significant relationship with Bentz.
According to the complaint, the girl told police that on several occasions in the last year and a half Bentz had put his hand down her shirt, masturbated in front of her and touched her vagina.
Bentz reportedly told the girl not to tell anyone about their relationship because he would get in trouble.
Police also recovered several text messages Bentz sent to the girl between Jan. 17 and Feb. 8. Several of the messages were sexual, including one in which Bentz encouraged the girl to try masturbating and offered to help her and one in which he suggested continuing their relationship would be a good way to get some of the things she wanted.
Police began to stand in for the girl in the text conversations.
In a Feb. 8 text message, Bentz wrote, "you can't tell ANYONE if I do this and you tell on me I'll go to jail for a long time..."
Police arrested Bentz Feb. 11 as he returned from his job as a truck driver. According to the complaint, he admitted touching the girl's breasts over her clothing and acknowledged sending text messages to her.
The Dakota County Attorney's office has charged Bentz with first- and second degree criminal sexual conduct as well as communication of sexually explicit material to children.
The first degree charge has a maximum sentence of 30 years and a maximum fine of $40,000. The second degree charge has a maximum sentence of 25 years and a maximum fine of $35,000. The third charge has a maximum sentence of three years and a maximum fine of $5,000.
Bentz made his first court appearance Feb. 14 in Hastings. An omnibus hearing is scheduled for March 5. Bentz remained in jail Tuesday night in lieu of a $200,000 bond.
