When the Hastings High School boys hockey team opens the season in the winter of 2007, it will still be searching for its first win of the year.
The Raiders finished the season 4-22-0 and won their final game of the year Dec. 29, 2006, against New Richmond, Wis.
Hastings followed the win with 15 straight losses, which included a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Tartan in overtime in the first round of the section playoffs.
Hastings lost just 2:57 into the overtime on a slap shot from the top of the left circle.
And while the Raiders did lose the game, it was the best game Hastings played in the new year, outshooting its opponent 40-20.
Hastings returns a number of players from the team, including three of its top five goal-scorers.
Junior Drew Waxlax led the team in scoring after posting 18 points this season, (11 goals, seven assists).
Sophomore Aaron Sykes is also slated to return after tying for second on the team in scoring with 16 points (six goals, 10 assists).
Junior Bob Speedling also is expected to return after posting 15 points (seven goals, eight assists).
Hastings loses a chunk of scoring from seniors Reese Chezick (16 points), Brandon Boyd (15 points), Bryan Kranz (10 points) and Jake Engelmeier?(nine points).
The?Raiders also will lose senior goalie Alex McCallum, who picked up two of the Raiders' four wins in net.
Junior Jake Kimmes and sophomore John Gleinser are expected to return next season and showed flashes of solid play during the season.
Gleinser stopped 18 of 20 shots in the last Hastings win of the season and followed with a 31 of 33 performance in a close loss just six days later.
Kimmes started the playoff game for the Raiders and stopped 18 of 20 shots, which included three breakaway saves.
