"The action is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, La., where all the ladies who are anybody come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle, who is not sure whether or not she's still married, the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser ('I'm not crazy; I've just been in a bad mood for 40 years.'), an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth, and the local social leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a 'good ole boy.'"
Each year, the Hastings High School Drama Club students fill out an application and go through a selection process to direct a student-run play. This year, Joe Bigelow and Liz Behnke were selected as student directors, and they chose the play "Steel Magnolias."
Under the supervision of Robin Starch (play advisor) and Anne Blessing (technical advisor), they select the play, conduct try-outs, direct and produce the play.
The play, a fundraiser for the Drama Club, will be at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Feb. 5 and 6, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at Hastings High School. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
Cast members are Julianne Medcraft, Makenna Klein, Paige Rgnonti, Jessica Doffing, Katie Cook, and Bethany Rough. Technical directors are Rachel Allgor and Isabel Arenivar. Lewis Youngren is the stage manager.
