NORTHFIELD -- After a strong showing at last week's Lake City Time Trials, the Winger girls went into Friday's meet at St. Olaf College with raised expectations. An injury and worse-than-expected performances saw the team finish 11th in a 12-team field.
"We kind of had an off day," Red Wing coach Jesse Nelson said. "I thought we were going to have a better (showing)."
The Wingers finished with a cumulative time of 70 minutes, 13 seconds, well back of Fargo South's winning mark of 59:50.
Austin finished 15 seconds back of Red Wing to take last.
Paige Bystrom led the team with a time of 13:35, followed by Paige Haley's 13:38.
Senior Suzanne Allen posted a time of 14:02 in her first varsity race.
Haley Banitt (14:24), Megan Roper (14:34), Emily Linquist (14:36) and Cally Simanski (14:40) rounded out the lineup.
Senior Liz Bauer, who is expected to be one of the team's top runners, was out with a foot injury.
"We look forward to getting Liz back and hopefully the rest of the girls can run a little better on Thursday," Nelson said.
The Wingers return to action Thursday at the Hastings Invite.
