KENYON -- Two weeks after the Knights dismissed New Richland-H-E-G by 13 points, the Panthers exacted revenge in the Section 2AA East Tournament quarterfinals.

New Richland-H-E-G, the No. 5 seed, led by as many as 12 points in the second half and held on to beat No. 4 Kenyon-Wanamingo 60-54. The Knights finished the season 7-17 overall.

Knights coach Matt Addington took solace in how his players battled back.

In years past, if K-W trailed by 12 points the game would have been over, he said.

"Our guys believed all the way through to the end that we had a chance of winning," Addington said.

The Knights pulled within two points with about 25 seconds to play and appeared to have possession.

But K-W couldn't hold onto the ball after New Richland-H-E-G missed a free throw and it went out of bounds. Panthers ball. After New Richland-H-E-G hit a pair of free throws to push its lead to four, Addington thought the five players on the court knew which set he wanted them to run.

That wasn't the case and the Knights turned the ball over with about nine seconds to play to seal their fate.

"I made the mistake of not using the timeout to make sure" they knew the set, Addington said.

Sophomore Brandon Quam hit a pair of 3-pointers and led K-W with 17 points.

Senior Ben Fletcher added 11 points and sophomore Brady Anfinson scored eight for the Knights.
