Park High's boys track and field team got a sampling on Saturday of what they'll be facing on Tuesday at the true team meet in Cottage Grove.

The Wolfpack finished in sixth place out of nine teams at the Hamline University relays on Saturday behind champion Mounds View, Wayzata and Roseville -- three teams to grab Class 3A state rankings last week.

But Jason Badger and Justin Arndt were the best in their respective fields.

Badger won the high jump in 6 feet, 2 inches and Park swept the pole vault with a victory from Arndt 13-6 -- a personal best -- and runner-up finish by Matt Masloski at 13 feet.

"We didn't run fully loaded either," said Park coach Mike Moran. "I think if we would have run as fully loaded as we could have been, we could have been fourth."

Ken Thompson led the sprinters, tying for second place in the 200-meter dash and a third place finish in the 100, but the Wolfpack had three boys place in the shot put. Pat Schwartz took third, Tim Juba took eighth and Nick Levang finished in ninth.

"We all did pretty well," Moran said. "All three of our shot puts made the finals in the shot, so we had a good day over there. Both Tim and Nick making it was a positive. They were both right on the edge of whether they would or wouldn't."

It was a big follow up from Park's third-place finish at Blaine on Tuesday, where the Wolfpack finished with 57 points behind champion Blaine, which was ranked fifth in the Class 3A state rankings last week.

The Wolfpack, however, saw the meet as an opportunity to showcase some of its less-than-familiar varsity faces -- making the third-place finish an even more positive outlook.

"When we first signed up for that meet, we thought it was going to be an unlimited entry meet," Moran said. "It turned out not to be, so we tried to have every kid in the meet. We had a lot of people running one race that normally run two or three so the younger kids could have a chance at a varsity meet. With five or six exceptions, we got almost everybody in the meet. We did not run loaded by any means."

Thompson won the 100 last Tuesday in 11.3 seconds and Mike Callan won the 3,200 run in 10:32.1. In the field events, Andrew Thomas won the long jump in 18-6 and Badger, who was also an honor roll qualifier, took third place in the high jump at 6-0.

Park hosts the section tournament Tuesday, which will include some familiar faces, like Woodbury and Tartan, but some new, like Farmington, which is in Park's section for the first time.

"Eagan and Sibley will be there and we beat them (Saturday) and Cretin is there," Moran said. "We're trying to keep everybody healthy and we're looking forward to conference and section."
