Park High School's girls tennis team burst into the post season last week, taking a 7-0 win over St. Paul Como Park last Wednesday in the first round before meeting Section 3AA top seed Simley last Thursday in Inver Grove Heights.

Park, seeded No. 8, ended its team run by falling to Simley, 6-1, while Simley locked a date with No. 4 Henry Sibley, which beat Tartan 5-2 on Thursday.

No. 3 Cretin-Derham Hall beat Woodbury 6-1 and No. 2 Roseville beat South St. Paul

7-0 to advance to the section's semifinal.

"We faced them last year in the same place, and we thought we matched up with them, but you can tell (Simley) put a lot of time in during the summer," said Park coach Cris Glade. "They were very intelligent match players, and they kept our kids on their toes. Our kids tried hard, they just didn't have the same match experience, and it showed in the match."

Azeib Nigatu brought in the only victory for the Wolfpack on Thursday, beating Simley's Sarah Madigan 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.

But the season is not finished for the Wolfpack's top two singles and doubles teams.

Nigatu and the Wolfpack's No. 2 singles player, Elizabeth Murray, will join the doubles teams of Meghan Sockness and Jenny Schrankler, and Faustina Amponsem and Kelsey Johnsen this Friday in 3AA individual sections, which will be in Fort Snelling at

9 a.m.

The six members of the Wolfpack continue a season, that included Park's blanking of St. Paul Como Park a little more than a week after beating the same team 6-1.

This year's squad also beat SEC foe Woodbury 5-2 on Sept. 27, bringing to fruition a goal -- to win a conference match -- the team set early in the season before finishing the 2006 campaign 4-9.

"I thought our kids did a nice job this season," Glade said. "I was really impressed with the effort; a lot of kids really improved over the course of going from last year to this year. They're a quality bunch of kids."
