A Minnesota man died in a two-vehicle accident in heavy fog late Monday morning about a mile south of Interstate 94 near Roberts. Gordon E. Cariveau, 74, of Oronoco, Minn. died in the accident.

St. Croix County authorities said James E. Peuse, 81, of Eau Claire, was driving eastbound in a 2009 Ford Edge when he failed to stop at a sign at Highway 65 and struck a southbound 2002 Ford Econoline van driven by Gordon E. Cariveau, 74, of Oronoco, Minn.

The van entered the west ditch and rolled several times before coming to rest on its roof in a nearby field. Cariveau had to be extricated from the van before he was transported to  Hudson Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Cariveau’s passenger, Yvonne M. Cariveau, 72, also of Oronoco, was also taken to Hudson Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

A passenger in the Peuse’s sport utility vehicle, Wyllis M. Peuse, 78, of Eau Claire, was taken to River Falls Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Gordon and Yvonne Cariveau are owners of Antiques Oronoco, a collectibles business, according to a web site they host.

Deputies closed both lanes of Highway 65 for nearly three hours to accommodate the many emergency vehicles as River Falls and Roberts-Warren firefighters performed the lengthy extrication.

A light rain was falling and the temperature was 48 degrees as rescuers worked.
