It was a big summer for Mayo Clinic Health System and the city of Cannon Falls, which celebrated the opening of a new 92,000-square-foot medical center off Goodhue County Road 24.

“The new facility has allowed us to serve our patients better in many ways,” said Bill Priest, operations administrator. “The additional space and upgraded technology have contributed to a healthy, healing environment that allows us to provide comprehensive care.”

The three-level, $28 million facility houses a 24-hour emergency department with 15 hospital beds and five emergency treatment bays.

The clinic opened Aug. 4 and saw 363 patients in the first week, Mayo Clinic Health System says. By Aug. 10, the emergency room treated 42 patients and five were admitted to the hospital.

“Our hope is this space will serve patients and their families for many years to come and will benefit the community economically as well,” Priest said.

The building is the product of more than a year of construction with financial support from public donations, levy dollars and $200,000 from a staff fundraising drive.

Citizens got to tour the facility at an open house July 25. Cathy Brekken, chair of the community campaign cabinet, joined Priest to cut the ceremonial blue ribbon.

“This was a tremendous example of collaboration between the city, county and our business,” Dr. Robert Nesse, Mayo Clinic Health System CFO, said on the day of the event.

Mayo Clinic Health System in Cannon Falls replaced Cannon Falls Community Hospital and Nursing Home built in the late 1950s. The hospital became affiliated with Mayo Health System in 2006.

“We’re so glad that Mayo Clinic made such a significant investment in our new hospital in Cannon Falls,” said John Peterson, chair of the Cannon Falls Area Chamber of Commerce. “Much like good schools, access to high-quality health care is vital in a small community and our new hospital has been a source of pride in Cannon Falls. It’s an investment in our future and it’s an absolutely beautiful facility.”

The building offers “increased access to emergency care in time-sensitive, life-threatening situations,” according to the Mayo Clinic Health System website.

Along with being three times larger than the old site, Mayo Clinic says new technology will allow for easier collaboration with doctors in Rochester, Red Wing and Lake City locations.
