Hellmers began her teaching career with the Hudson School District in 2005 as a third Grade teacher at Houlton Elementary. In 2008, she moved into the position of school district Literacy Coach where she shared her literacy experience as a teacher with colleagues to help improve student literacy across the school district.

In 2012, Ms. Hellmers became one of the school district’s instructional coaches. In this position, she has assisted in the development and implementation of new teacher training that is focused on building instructional strategies to support their success. Additionally, she has been responsible for working collaboratively with teachers to determine the best practices to meet student needs, support district curriculum, and challenge teachers to reach their fullest potential.

“It is with great enthusiasm that we have selected Sue Hellmers to be the next Principal at Houlton Elementary School,” said incoming Superintendent Nick Ouellette. “We had a very strong pool of candidates contending for the position. I am impressed with her student-centered leadership that she has demonstrated as a literacy coach and instructional coach in the district.

“I believe Sue will be able to build upon the many successes of Houlton and work well with staff to continue to help students grow and flourish. Sue is a leader that truly understands the needs of students at a variety of levels, but especially at the elementary level.

Sue’s institutional understanding of the district and Houlton will allow her to hit the ground running as Houlton’s new Principal. I could not be more excited to have Sue be a part of the Elementary Leadership Team in Hudson.”

In response to her new role, Hellmers said, “I am honored to be joining the Hudson School District as Principal of Houlton Elementary School. I have been an educator, teacher leader, volunteer, and parent in Hudson for over 10 years, and I look forward to a new leadership opportunity within the district.

“It has been an honor to serve Hudson in many capacities. I look forward to sharing my passion for students, learning, and collaboration with the Houlton community. I am eager to work together with the Houlton staff and families to support and nurture the continued growth of their students.”

A leadership transition plan is being developed for Hellmers to collaborate with outgoing Principal Ann Mitchell (She will move to principal of the Middle School).

Pending Board approval, Hellmers’ official start date as Houlton Elementary Principal is July 1.
