The Hudson High School marching band has been chosen to participate in the 2016

Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Honolulu, Hawaii. The band will be marching in the Pearl Harbor Parade on Dec. 7 as part of the 75th Anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack.

Marching band director Ryan McCarthy said the band was chosen by the Pearl Harbor Memorial Committee as a representative of Wisconsin, as Wisconsin is a battleship state. Each state with a battleship named for it will be represented.

“We are extremely honored to be invited and represent the state of Wisconsin as a part of this historic event,” McCarthy said. “Testimonials from other bands have talked about what an amazing experience this is. The opportunity for our kids to interact and meet veterans who were a part of the Pearl Harbor bombing is beyond incredible. Our students are going to get to go face to face with history. We can’t wait.”

The band will travel to Hawaii on Dec. 3 and will perform three times. In addition to the parade, the band will perform at two other venues, with one of them possibly being the USS Arizona Memorial, before returning home Dec. 8.

The band will perform is “This Is My Country” on the parade route as well as other selections including the Navy hymn for other scheduled concerts.

The band is busy raising funds to pay for the trip.

“Unfortunately, as great of an opportunity as this is for our kids, it’s not free. Students have to pay over $2,000 each for the trip” said McCarthy.

The choice to make the trip is optional for band members. Of the 100 students in the marching band, 61 have decided to make the trip.

Fundraising efforts have started, including a Smashburger night earlier this week, where a portion of the profits go to the band, and a waffle breakfast on the morning of May 15 at HHS. Tickets for that event will be available from the HHS band office, (715) 377-3811, or from any Hawaii band member. The cost is $8.

McCarthy added: “The community really supported us last year with our uniform initiative, we hoping that they will understand we’re representing not just Hudson, but the state of Wisconsin on this trip.”
