On Aug. 15, 2018, St. Croix County Supervisor Bob Feidler (D9, Hudson) and Chair, Roger Larson (D11, Star Prairie) joined members of The Friends of St. Croix Wetland Management District and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) staff from the New Richmond office on a paddle of Oak Ridge Lake nestled in the Oak Ridge Waterfowl Production Area. Friends members Warren Irle, Ron Roettger, Shelly Mathyis and Buck Malick along with the USFWS co-sponsored the "Legislator's Canoe Outing."

The event provided local legislators with an overview of habitat management activities, water quality monitoring, Karner Blue Butterfly research activities and outdoor recreation opportunities that take place on a waterfowl production area. USFWS staff took advantage of the opportunity to explain the importance of public private partnerships in creating resources like Oak Ridge. The floating forum enjoyed calm conditions while participants were treated to the sights and sounds of the marsh including feeding Trumpeter Swans, Blue-winged Teal, flyovers of Green Heron and a soaring juvenile Bald Eagle while Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Great-crested Flycatchers called from the nearby oak savannah.
