About half a dozen people searching for a lost dog risked the thin ice on the St. Croix River Monday, apparently in hopes of collecting the reward offered by the animal's owner.

The dog named Hawkeye has allegedly been seen in the Hudson area, and a Texas woman is offering a $1,000 reward for his safe return.

The blue merle Australian shepherd, an intact male with a full white collar, was being transported from Brainerd, Minn., to Texas when he got loose Nov. 26, in Afton, Minn. After a television story aired about the escape, callers said they saw the dog in Hudson.

Hudson Police Chief Marty Jensen said the dog was spotted on the ice and along the shore, but ran whenever anyone got close to it. One of the search teams was using a canoe. Jensen said the ice is not uniformly thick enough to make it safe.

"I think the reward is what is driving people, but it just isn't safe out there," said Jensen.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Hawkeye should call Debbie at (817) 991-5074.
