For several years, the Somerset Chamber of Commerce has held a free "Christmas in Somerset" event at Veterans Park, complete with bonfire and visits from Santa.

This year, however, the event moves to a new location.

The chamber announced that it is joining forces with the Somerset Youth Hockey Association to sponsor a open skate event Wednesday, Dec. 9, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Somerset Youth Civic Center, 529 Main St.

According to Casey Goessi, president of the chamber, the decision to move the event has several benefits.

"The weather in previous years has not always cooperated," Goessi said. "Plus they had the perfect setup at the hockey arena - opportunity to add more to the experience."

Although there won't be any bonfires, there will be a spaghetti dinner for purchase, as well as concessions of cookies, popcorn and hot beverages.

Attendees can bring their own skates or they can rent them from the arena or nearby Treadmill Sports.

Santa is also scheduled to visit; parents are encouraged to bring their own cameras.
