The Woodbury softball team opened the Section 3AAA playoffs with a 9-0 rout of St. Paul Harding at Bossen Field in South Minneapolis Monday night.
Pitcher Alex Chichila hit a three-run inside-the-park home run in the second inning after driving in a run with a single in the first inning. The junior also struck out seven of nine Knights batters in three innings of work, allowing no hits. Ashley Starken relieved Chichila in the fourth and struck out three.
Top-seeded Woodbury will face No. 4 seed Tartan in the second round on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Nieman Field Complex at Fort Snelling.
WHS Girls Golf
Chelsey Larson won medalist honors as the Woodbury girls golf team won its Suburban East Conference match at Forest Hills G.C. Monday afternoon.
Larson shot a 41 to lead the Royals to a team score of 177 -- seven strokes better than Forest Lake.
The 12-7 Royals broke out the bats Monday night with a 13-5 pounding of Robbinsdale Cooper in a non-conference matchup at WHS.
Bryce Bintzler earned the win in relief of starter Ben Thone as Zwieg went 3-4 with two runs and an RBI.
David Eddy drove in five runs, with Joey Link scoring three times. Dittel went 2-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Woodbury will find out its opening-round opponent in the upcoming Section 3AAA playoffs tomorrow evening, with the playoffs to begin Friday. Coach Wayne Dietz expects the team to open at home.
WHS Boys Tennis
The Woodbury boys tennis team's season Monday afternoon as top seed Henry Sibley finished off the Royals 6-1 in the Section 3AA semifinals.
The lone match win in the semis came from the third doubles team of Nesvig and Zimny. However, Johnson and Carrier did take their match to a third-set tiebreaker before falling.
Woodbury team members will not prepare for the section individual tournament, which begins Thursday at Highland Park (doubles) and Cretin-Derham Hall (singles).
Individual section seedings and brackets were set to be announced tomorrow night.
