The Hudson City Council on Monday night decided to contract with Frisbie Architects for the planning of a new public safety building.
The River Falls firm will be paid $18,000 for the study, plus up to $1,000 for expenses it incurs completing it.
Last June, an ad-hoc study committee comprised of Alderperson Lee Wyland and the chiefs of the city's police, fire and ambulance departments came to the conclusion that an additional public safety building is needed.
The ad hoc committee laid out a handful of options for meeting the departments' needs for additional space.
The No. 1 option was the construction of a new facility to house all of the police department and St. Croix EMS, plus offices and two additional vehicle bays for the fire department.
Frisbie Architects' job will be to verify the findings of the ad hoc committee and provide recommendations on the floor plan and location of a new building.
Wyland said that he, Mayor Dean Knudson and City Administrator Devin Willi interviewed four firms that responded to the city's request for proposals on the study.
Each of the firms was well-qualified to do the work, he said, but Frisbie Architects had the best knowledge of local conditions.
Knudson said the firm will weigh different potential configurations for the building.
He indicated that he hasn't ruled out the combination of a police station and public library.
