Hammond Heartland Days is Aug. 11-14 and preparations are being made for the community celebration.

A big part of the weekend's festivities is the crowning of the new royal court. The Hammond Heartland Days pageant is planned for 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at St. Croix Central Middle School. This year's candidates for the Hammond queen include:

Name: Makayla Jahns

Age: 16

How many years have you lived in Hammond? 10

How would you describe the Hammond community? A very friendly place to live, everyone knows everyone, and I love that!

Why are you running for Miss Hammond? Because I would like to get more involved in the community and let people know how amazing Hammond really is and how it truly is a good place to live. I would like to volunteer more with the children to get them more involved in the community also, because that is the most important thing. 

What is one of your favorite Heartland Days memories? Getting free rides from the carnies! Along with dancing in the tent with friends and family!

What activities/groups are you involved in (in and outside of school)? Cheerleading, I would like to become involved in prom committee this year along with the SOS program at school. 

What are your hobbies? Going camping with my family and friends, going to movies, the park, football games and cheerleading.

What are your plans after graduation? Graduate early from high school to attend Wisconsin Indian Technical College- New Richmond and hopefully get into the nursing program there to eventually become a pediatric nurse and work in a local children's hospital.

How many years have you lived in Hammond? I have lived in Hammond my entire life and I've loved every second of it. 

How would you describe the Hammond community? The Hammond community is a very kind and loving place to live. Everyone is so helpful and will stop anything and go out of their way to do something for someone else. 

Why are you running for Miss Hammond? I am running for Miss Hammond because I love Hammond and I can't imagine living anywhere else. I would love to have the opportunity to represent the Town of Hammond. It would be so much fun going to all the parades and pageants and meet other girls that you can have so much fun with! 

What is one of your favorite Heartland Days memories? Oh boy, there are so many! But I have to say my favorite was last year having three of my best friends spend the night then all get ready in the same bathroom and walk down to the park. We went to the carnival area and rode on some rides and played games then we went to the Army tent and took pictures holding the guns! We also laid in the grass to try and tan (it didn't last too long, we got bored). We shared so many laughs and memories it will stay with me forever! 

What activities/groups are you involved in (in and outside of school)? I am an active member in DECA and FLA. I will hopefully be involved in yearbook and prom committee this coming year. I am in youth choir for church and I like to help build sets for the high school and middle school plays with set crew. 

What are your hobbies? I love art; painting, drawing, sculpting and pottery. It's all fun! I also like reading, writing, swimming, yoga and playing Wii Sports.  

What are your plans after graduation? After graduation I plan on attending the University of Minnesota-St. Paul and double major in criminal psychology and sociology. Earning a master's degree in both and a doctoral degree in which ever one I enjoy the most.

How many years have you lived in Hammond? Seven

How would you describe the Hammond community? Family, I like knowing that the people I go to church with are the people that I see at school, at football games, around town, during Heartland Days and Good Neighbor Days. It gives me a sense of belonging that I did not have in St. Paul.

Why are you running for Miss Hammond? It is so amazing living in a community that is like family. The town has changed me and given me the foundation to be a better person and I want to be able to pay that back. It would be such an honor to be able to tell the other communities about such an amazing place.

What is one of your favorite Heartland Days memories? The car show on Saturday. My dad has participated in the car show every year since we moved to Hammond.

What activities/groups are you involved in (in and outside of school)? Forensics, choir, FLA, varsity volleyball manager, volunteering, Trinity Lutheran Youth Group and volunteer at Vacation Bible School.

What are your hobbies? Shopping, talking, public speaking, reading, being with friends and family.

What are your plans after graduation? I plan on attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison or Milwaukee to become a history teacher.

How many years have you lived in Hammond? Seven years

How would you describe the Hammond community? I would say it's like one big family. But the kind of family that is loving and caring, and a bit crazy at times.

What is one of your favorite Heartland Days memories? Dancing to the band with friends. 

What activities/groups are you involved in (in and outside of school)?  Vacation Bible School helper, rugby, volleyball, student council and FLA.  

What are your hobbies? I love photography, drawing, cooking, shopping, rugby, dancing, yoga and a million other things!

What are your plans after graduation? I plan on going to either St. Cloud State or Augsburg College to major in business. Also, travelling a lot is a part of the plan.

How would you describe the Hammond community? Like a big family where everyone knows everyone else.

Why are you running for Miss Hammond? I think it is a great opportunity to represent the community I live in and love.

What is one of your favorite Heartland Days memories? The parades have always been my favorite part of Hammond Days. From riding in them after helping with Little Miss Hammond to just watching and getting candy. I love parades!

What activities/groups are you involved in (in and outside of school)? I am a wrestling and football cheerleader

What are your hobbies? Camping with my family, duck hunting with my dad and cheerleading.

What are your plans after graduation? Going to college for ultrasound tech.
