Four passengers on a pontoon boat that went over the power dam at Lake Zumbro were rescued with no serious injuries after an emergency call came in at 10:40 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, according to Wabasha County Sheriff Rodney. Bartsh.
The group had docked the boat near the building structure portion of the power dam. When they returned and left the dock area, they discovered they were close to the edge of the dam. The driver attempted to leave the area but was unsuccessful. One person jumped off the pontoon and swam to a buoy. The other three stayed on the pontoon as it went over the dam and landed upright on a shelf below the dam, according to news release.
Nearby boaters took the individual who jumped off to shore. The three persons on the pontoon were rescued by a collaboration of firefighters, deputies, and boaters and brought to safety. All individuals were examined by the Zumbrota Ambulance crew and one was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident is still under investigation, but alcohol and darkness appeared to be factors in the incident, according to Bartsh.
The Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office, Mazeppa Fire department, Zumbrota Ambulance, and Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call.
