Following the resignation of longtime Hastings Middle School Principal Mark Zuzek in early April, Superintendent Tim Collins announced the district has selected Steve Kovach to fill the vacancy.

"This was taken very seriously. This is a very important position in our district and the selection was taken very seriously," School Board Chair Lisa Hedin said. "It was a diverse group around the table participating in the selection process with representatives of the middle school staff, both in core and allied arts curriculum areas."

Kovach, a Mankato State University graduate with a master's from St. Mary's University to go along with an education specialist degree and administrative licensure from the University of St. Thomas, spent the first 20 years of his career in Lakeville before he moved to Albert Lea in 2013 to take over as principal at Southwest Middle School.

"We heard a lot of good things," Collins said.
