The Education Foundation of Hudson last week honored two Hudson teachers with Star Excellence Awards. The winners were River Crest Elementary teacher Vicki Aulert and St. Patrick School teacher Tim DeJardin.
Each teacher was honored by the Education Foundation during ceremonies at Hudson High School May 9. Each winner was among those nominated by the public earlier this spring.
Aulert, who lives in Woodbury, Minn., teaches early childhood special education and has taught for 42 years, including the last 31 in Hudson. A native of Des Plaines, Ill., she earned her bachelor's degree and teaching certificate at Midland Lutheran College. She also earned her early childhood certificate at Concordia College and a master's degree in early childhood special education at the University of St. Thomas.
She and her husband Bob have one adult child, Allison, 35.
DeJardin, who lives in Eau Claire, teaches physical education and health at St. Patrick School in Hudson. He has also been active as a coach at the school. He has taught for 33 years, all at St. Patrick School. A native of Luxemburg, Wis., he earned his bachelor's degree at UW-La Crosse.
Although currently living in Eau Claire, he has lived in Hudson in the past.
He and his wife Carole have two adult children, Amy, 34, and Libby, 26.
The Star Excellence Award includes $3,000 in cash for the teacher's personal use and a handmade, engraved vase. The honor is designed to recognize teachers or staff members who have demonstrated an unusual commitment to inspire students to reach for difficult and lofty goals. Persons recognized have earned the respect of students, parents and peers through sustained effort, high moral standards and the likelihood of enduring beneficial effects on the students with whom they have worked.
Any current or former full-time or part-time employee of a not-for-profit school within the Hudson School District is eligible for nomination.
