People were standing on sidewalks and street corners Monday morning, June 24, 2019, with cell phones out and cameras pointed at the Academy building as deconstruction began.
The 1927 and 1940s portions of the building are being knocked down. The process, according to River Falls School District Finance and Facilities director Chad Smurawa, will take around four weeks.
The Academy building has been the home of River Falls Public Montessori Academy for years. Once the older portions are knocked down, and the building is reconstructed, it will continue to house the Montessori Academy.
For the 2019-2020 school year, during reconstruction, the Montessori students will attend school in the former RiverTown Multimedia building at 2815 Prairie Drive.
The building is being leased by the district from the city of River Falls, which purchased the building with the intent to renovate it into a new police station in the future.
