UPDATE: Xcel Energy: Fault in underground feeder to blame for power outage

An underground fire on East Fifth Street caused power outages throughout the city of Red Wing around 11:40 a.m., Thursday, March 29, according to a city news release.

The outages prompted early closings of Red Wing schools, which will release students 90 minutes early. 

Red Wing Fire Department cleared the scene of the underground fire on East Fifth Street near Colvill School.

Though power has been restored to some areas, outages are expected to last until 3 p.m. as crews repair damage. 

The police department is manning key intersections throughout the city where traffic lights are without power.

Residents who utilize home medical equipment that requires electricity are reminded to locate back up batteries and alternative power sources. Those who require medical assistance immediately are encouraged to call 911.

More than 4,800 Xcel Energy customers were impacted by the outages as of 1 p.m. Thursday, according to an Xcel Energy Electric Outage Map.

Xcel Energy has 8,804 customers in Red Wing.
