Ellsworth resident Kerry Feuerhelm defeated her challenger for the Pierce County Clerk of Court on Tuesday night.

Feuerhelm, a Republican, beat her Democrat opponent and clerk of court worker Megan Erwin 9,719 votes to 7,673 votes in preliminary counts. Feuerhelm, currently a judicial assistant for county court officials, had told RiverTown Multimedia she would look to improve training opportunities for the position’s staff and recoup outstanding fines.

Feuerhelm couldn’t be reached for comment late Tuesday night.

Feuerhelm has previously worked as a clerk in St. Croix County, and ran on her 15 years of experience in legal positions.

"I have knowledge in all the case types," Feuerhelm previously told RiverTown. "There's a lot of things that come at you in 15 years."

Her opponent has worked in the office as a traffic clerk since 2015, and said she wasn’t sure what her future in the office would look like.

“I’m usually pretty ambitious,” she said in an interview Tuesday. “I’m not saying I’m [leaving], I’m not saying I am going to stick around. I just don’t know.”

In the buildup to the election, Erwin touted her varied experience in and outside the clerk office. She had admitted she was going up against a more well known name in the race, and she was surprised by how she fared.

“I don’t think it shook out the way I wanted it to be … we both ran a good campaign and I wish her good luck,” Erwin said.

Feuerhelm will replace her mother-in-law Peg Feuerhelm, who is retiring after a lengthy tenure as clerk of court.
