1999 – 25 years

At the March 6 annual recognition banquet of the Gamehaven council, three area scouting volunteers were presented with the Silver Beaver Award. This award is a national Boy Scouts of America award used to recognize adult volunteers for outstanding service to youth within the scouting program. The Silver Beaver Award is the highest award any Boy Scout Council can present.

 

Attorneys representing the wife of a Lake City who died in an accident at Zumbrota cheese processing facility in 1995 have failed in an appeal seeking reversal of a decision which allows the family to seek only workers’ compensation benefits. The victim died after falling into a grinder while loading blocks of cheese at mid-America Dairymen Inc.

 

1974 – 50 years

 

Students staged a mass walkout Wednesday afternoon at Zumbrota High School. The students who organized the walkout during lunch hour Wednesday said they are concerned about two areas: academics and student freedom.

 

The Red Wing Nursing Home could lose 15 percent of federal funding and be reduced from a Skilled Care facility to an Intermediate Care I facility on April 15. The nursing home director was notified on March 15 that he had 30 days to correct deficiencies within the nursing home as required by the National Safety Code.

 

1924 – 100 Years

Saint Patrick was honored yesterday on his big day. It is the courage and intelligence of the fighting Irish people that the world honors but it honors Saint Patrick. The bones of the Irish lie in graves everywhere in open fields of battle in France, in the Balkans, in South America. Over every one of them, you might truthfully write he won his fight, or they had to kill him to beat him.

 

The house today passed the soldier bonus bill. The measure is radically different from the bill President Harding vetoed. Its principal provision is a 20-year endowment insurance which will be issued to all ex-servicemen except those whose compensation is $50.00 or less. These will be entitled to cash.
