Red Wing Arts is hosting its inaugural Pottery Throwdown, a unique event celebrating creativity, community and competition.

The Pottery Throwdown is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 at Red Wing Arts’ Clay & Creative Center, 436 W. Third St.

The event marks a significant milestone in the organization’s mission to build a vibrant community fueled by the arts, according to Red Wing Arts.

During the Pottery Throwdown, professional potters and local celebrities will face off in a series of challenges on the pottery wheel. Three rounds will each have a limited number of 40 tickets to ensure an intimate and engaging experience, according to Red Wing Arts.

Tom Larkin and Glynnis Lessing will judge the event. Professional pottery competitors include Jeff McDowell, Colleen Riley and Donovan Palmquist and celebrity pottery competitors include Michelle Larson of the Red Wing Chamber of Commerce, Allison Young of Salon With A Twist and Bryan Soper of the Red Wing YMCA. More competitors are expected to be announced.

Attendees will witness the intensity of competition unfold throughout the day. The first round of competition is slated for 10 a.m.-noon, when contestants kick off the competition with challenges from shaping clay to intricate designs. The second round of competition is scheduled for 2-4 p.m., when contestants complete a second round of challenges to win a spot in the finals. At 6-9 p.m., the top talents will compete in the finals to showcase their mastery of the craft and win a clay trophy and bragging rights. Light hors d’oeuvres, music by the Tennessee Stiffs and a live auction are included in the finals round.

Tickets for the first and second rounds are $50 each and tickets for the finals are $150 each.
