At last summer is upon us. Among the splendid offerings that surround us is a plethora of songbirds filling the sky with a chorus unequaled. Few creatures make such intricate, complex sounds as birds. Now in the height of birdsong season we hear a mix of music as they open their throats. Many composers take inspiration from bird songs.

Controversy persists about why birds sing - is it for communication, or simply for the joy of singing, or both? And why do humans sing?

Listen here to birds at normal speed and slowed to a frequency closer to human speech

Here come the human choristers and the long, bright days are filled with music of our own species. It's enough to stir the soul as humans come together to sing and we are reminded that all species are connected.

The University Community Chorus invites singers to join them for the summer season. Rehearsals are every Wednesday now until July 31 from 7-9 p.m. in Abbott Concert Hall, KFA. The Summer Songs and Sundaes Concert is Wednesday, July 31, at 7 p.m. in Abbott Concert Hall. Free will donation at the door. The community chorus is a non-auditioned mixed ensemble open to any UWRF student, faculty, or staff and community members. Everyone is welcome to join. The participation fee is $50.
