Wellhaven Senior Living hosts a monthly blood pressure clinic on the third Thursday each month at 10:30 a.m. Screenings will take place in the Fireside Lounge. This is a free event.
"Checking your blood pressure regularly is the only way to know if you have high blood pressure," said Erin McLagan, registered nurse at Wellhaven. "We want people to be aware of their health and take steps to be healthy. Our blood pressure clinic allows for community members to take advantage of a free way to learn more."
High blood pressure or hypertension almost never causes any symptoms, so people may not know they have it unless it's checked. If readings are greater than 140 over 90, you should see your physician. By keeping a log of blood pressure readings, you and your doctor can decide if you need treatment for hypertension. Untreated high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and heart failure.
Some people get abnormally high blood pressure readings at the doctor';s office, a common occurrence referred to as the "white coat" effect brought on by nervousness. If this is suspected, checking blood pressure over time in other settings is important.
"Our blood pressure clinic offers an alternative location to have a screening done," said McLagan. "Our care community is safe and welcoming. This low-stress environment should help ease or eliminate nervousness."
Stop in on the third Thursdays of the month to have your blood pressure checked. If you have questions, contact McLagan at 715-426-4632.
