December is a particularly busy month for most people. There is lots of bustling to and from places while shopping for gifts, attending holiday parties and more. After a snowfall, roads and walkways become slippery. This increases the chances of slipping and falling, especially for seniors. It's important for walkways to be salted and cleared of any ice.
"Fall prevention is a top priority at Wellhaven Senior Living. We want all our tenants, guests and team members to be safe while walking outside," said Brandon Saumer, Environmental Services and Maintenance Manager at Wellhaven.
Here's five easy ways to prevent falls during the winter:
• Ask for help.
• Don't travel into poor weather conditions, unless absolutely necessary.
• Be sure your shoes have good traction.
• Leave early to give yourself enough time. Be cautious and don't rush.
• Look for the safest path and use handrails if available.
According to Comfort Keepers, "1.6 million older adults go to the emergency room each year due to a fall. There are a variety of ways to prevent a loved one from a serious injury during winter such as encouraging an exercise program year round."
Wellhaven hosts an exercise class at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays morning. All seniors from the River Falls community are welcome to join the class. For more information, contact Laura Swanson at 715-425-4633.
