This letter is paid content. Every year our State Legislators go to St. Paul to craft legislation that should benefit ALL Minnesotans. But this past session, after months of committee meetings and endless hours of debate, the House and Senate failed to pass the 2020 bonding bill. The $1.8 billion bonding bill would have funded important infrastructure projects and kept thousands of people at work during this pandemic.
Important public projects including roads, bridges, and water and sewer projects were all denied funding. Why? Because Republicans did not want to play ball with the executive branch of our government. Republican legislators are having a temper tantrum over the Governor’s legitimate use of executive authority during a peacetime emergency. Virtually all governors across the country are having to make similar decisions to keep their citizens safe, especially given the lack of federal pandemic leadership. Governor Walz knows that the faster we defeat this pandemic, the faster we can get back to our normal way of life, and get our economy prospering once again.
In addition to not passing the bonding bill, the Republican Senate is now removing a State Commissioner every month, until Governor Walz “gives up” his leadership capacity. This is incredibly disruptive to our state agencies, who do an immense amount of work behind the scenes to keep our state operating and functional.
The Republicans’ childish tactics are hurting all Minnesotans. They are hurting you, hurting me – hurting the entire state of Minnesota. This is NOT how government should work!
This year let’s make Republicans take their ball and go home. Let’s elect people who will stop the dismantling of our democratic process, and who WILL work to improve people’s lives. We NEED funding for infrastructure; we NEED state leadership; we NEED legislators who will work together like grown-ups. Please join me in voting for Matt Bruns and Ralph Kaehler, who will go to St. Paul and get the job done. Enough of these childish games!
