This letter is paid content. I have had the pleasure of knowing Judge Joseph Carter for over 20 years, and worked with him for a substantial part of that time. I first met Joe in my chambers in Red Wing after he was appointed to be the Chief Public Defender for the First District. I have to say that I liked him from the beginning. We would occasionally tangle (it was part of our jobs) but I always had a great deal of respect for him. I liked him enough that when I remarried years after losing my first wife to illness, I asked Joe to preside over my wedding. My wife Karen had gotten to know Joe as well and wanted him to preside. Joe is very intelligent, slow to anger, kind and thoughtful. He’s got a good sense of humor. He cares deeply about his family. Most importantly for the voters, Joe is an excellent judge. He strives to be fair and strives to learn the facts and the law in cases before him. He’s quite knowledgeable about courtroom procedure and has the ability and demeanor to handle “big” cases. In other words, he is an asset to the bench and definitely merits a return to it.
