Double the state track champions for Spring Valley

Zac Webster lands in the triple jump pit.

LA CROSSE - Spring Valley High School runner Breanna Colbenson and jumper Zac Webster won their first-ever individual state titles today in the WIAA State Track and Field Meet.

Colbenson, a senior, took first in the Division 3 1600-meter run this morning, finishing a few hundredths of a second ahead of junior Isabel Seidel of Hartland University Lake School, the younger sister of Colbenson's longtime nemesis Molly Seidel, who now runs for Notre Dame. The split was 5:09.12 to 5:09.81. The two dominated the race as third place finisher, junior Leah Johnson of Pardeeville, ran a 5:19.84.

Colbenson has more chances to win gold tomorrow at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the UW-La Crosse campus. She'll run in the 3200-meter race and be a part of the 3200-meter relay with teammates from the state champion Division 3 girls cross country team, senior Riley Bowman, junior Emma Gaustad and sophomore Sara King.

Webster, a junior, took first in the Division 3 triple jump with a leap of 45-5 which was not wind aided. Second place went to Hilbert senior Austin Schaffer who jumped 45 feet even.

Webster also was a part of the Cardinals 1600-meter relay squad which ran its prelims today. He also will compete tomorrow in the high and triple jumps.

With the points Webster scored along with that of Julian Manley, a senior runner who placed fourth in the 3200-meter race, Valley finished the first day of competition in second in the team standings with 15 points behind Chippewa Falls McDonell's 18 points. Manley will also compete tomorrow in the 1600-meter run.

SV's girls team has 10 points and is currently in fourth place in the girls' team standings in Division 3.
