Red Wing finally got the timely hitting it craved Friday, but it came at the expense of a few former Aces.
Red Wing (11-13, 0-8 Section 1B) defeated the Burnsville Bulldogs, an over-35 team, 10-3 at Red Wing Athletic Field, which features Corey and Jay Tauer. Corey started at shortstop for Burnsville and Jay at second base, like the two had for the Aces. Corey played with the Aces from 1991 until 2010 and managed from 2003-10. Corey and Jay rank second and third, respectively in career hits for Red Wing. Jay played for the Aces from 1990 to 2004.
Both showed there's some pop left in their bats as Jay went 1-for-5 with a run and Corey finished 3-for-4 with a run and a double.
"It was fun to have them come down," Red Wing player-manager Andy Gibart said.
The Aces got the best of the Tauers and Bulldogs with clutch hitting. All 10 runs Red Wing scored came with two outs, including a four-run sixth and a five-run seventh inning.
"Finally we got some clutch hits," Gibart said. "That's what we've been waiting for all year."
Chris Guetzlaff provided two of those hits for the Aces and drove in four runs with a 2-for-4 performance. Guetzlaff also scored three runs. Steve Boldt went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs and Ryan Boldt went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Guetzlaff drove in two runs with a triple in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh with a single. Steve Boldt brought Guetzlaff in with a triple in the sixth.
After trading runs in the first inning, neither team scored until the sixth inning. Burnsville later added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
Josh Thygesen gave up just one run on four hits in seven innings for Red Wing to get the win.
Josh Loewen started for the Bulldogs and gave up one earned run on six hits. The Aces scored four unearned runs off Loewen in the sixth inning. Loewen finished with four walks and four strikeouts.
Corey Tauer threw 1 1/3 innings and gave up two hits and struck out one.
Another former Red Wing player, Brett Gadient, went 1-for-4 with a run for Burnsville.
The Aces will face Elko Sunday at 2 p.m. at Red Wing Athletic Field.
