Tampa Bay all-star Ben Zobrist singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift the Rays past the Twins 4-3 in the third installment of a four-game series in Florida. Kelly Johnson belted a two-run homer and Yunel Escobar plated a run and scored once for the Rays, who have won seven straight and 11 of their last 12. Cesar Ramos recorded the final two outs in the 13th to pick up the win. Pedro Florimon hit a two-run homer for the Twins, who have dropped four in-a-row and 10-of-11 overall. Ryan Pressly gave up the winning hit to Zobrist to suffer his first career loss.
The Twins wrap up their four-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays tonight at Tropicana Field. Mike Pelfrey gets the ball for Minnesota. He is 4-6 with a 5.63 ERA in 15 starts this season. The Rays will counter with Matt Moore, who is 12-3 with a 3.42 ERA.
The Yankees could be getting their captain back today. FoxSports.com reports Derek Jeter will return to the lineup for this afternoon's series finale against the Royals at Yankee Stadium. The 39-year-old has been out all season, but played in his fourth minor league rehab game on Wednesday. Jeter is working his way back from an ankle that's been broken twice. The Minnesota Twins open a three-game series in New York tomorrow.
The Timberwolves have agreed to terms on a contract with forward Corey Brewer, a player they originally drafted and then traded. Brewer now returns to Minnesota after spending the past two years in Denver. The team has also reportedly traded guard Luke Ridnour to Milwaukee to help their salary cap situation. The T'wolves postponed a scheduled news conference to introduce guard Kevin Martin to give the team time to make other moves.
The Minnesota Lynx begin a four-game road trip today in Indiana against the Fever. The Lynx will also make stops in Tulsa, San Antonio and Phoenix. Minnesota has won four of its last five following Tuesday's 94-72 rout of the Atlanta Dream. The Lynx sit at 9-3 on the season. The Fever have won three in-a-row to improve to 4-7. Today's game tips off at 11 a.m.
The University of Minnesota unveiled a massive athletics facilities upgrade plan to the Board of Regents on Wednesday. The proposed 190-million-dollar plan seeks to improve the student-athlete experience, change the future of Gopher Athletics, allow the university to attract and retain talented staff and connect the athletic facilities to the university and its neighborhoods.
Three Golden Gopher football players have been chosen to represent the University of Minnesota at this month's annual Big Ten Football Media Day and Kickoff Luncheon in Chicago. Gopher senior defensive tackle Ra'Shede Hageman of Minneapolis, senior defensive back Brock Vereen of Valencia, California, and junior running back Donnell Kirkwood of Delray Beach, Florida will be the Gopher participants. Players and coaches from all 12 Big Ten schools will meet with the media on July 24th in the Windy City. The 42nd annual Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon is set for July 25th in Chicago. The Golden Gophers open the regular season on Thursday, August 29th at home against Nevada-Las Vegas.
Former University of Minnesota and Cincinnati Bengals tight end Ben Utecht will be getting his money. Utecht won the injury grievance case related to a concussion he suffered during Cincinnati's 2009 training camp. It was ruled that he shouldn't have been cleared to practice. Utecht will be paid the 926,471-dollars he would have been paid for the rest of that season.
