Going on a 9-0 run in the first 90 seconds of the second half, Red Wing led by double digits the rest of the way in a 56-39 non-conference victory at Stewartville on Saturday.
Already one of Class 3A’s stingiest defenses, the Wingers held the Tigers to their lowest point total of the season while staying a perfect 7-0 against Section 1AAA opponents.
“Defensively, we were on our toes and really aware of their shooters,” said Red Wing head coach Doug Toivonen. “Their top scorer (Aaron Quandt) had to shoot a bunch to get his 25 (points).”
Ben Miller led a balanced Wingers offense with 16 points, while Ty Buck came up with 14 points and seven rebounds. Travis Toivonen was all over the box score with 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists while Joe Sevlie added nine points in the victory. Red Wing also held a big edge on the boards, outrebounding Stewartville 37-23.
Quandt had a game-high 25 points, but no other Tigers player finished with more than five points.
The sixth-ranked Wingers (10-1) return to Big Nine Conference play Tuesday at Rochester Mayo.
