Three Hastings Nordic skiers are competing today (Thursday) in the state meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

The three are Rachel Peterson, Kyle Gudmunson and Will Caturia.

Peterson advanced to the state meet by placing ninth overall at the Section 1 Championships at Hyland Recreation Area on Feb. 3. She had a time in the classic of 17 minutes and 22 seconds and a freestyle time of 17:25. Her time in the classic was the sixth-fastest on the day. She had a combined time of 34:46.

Peterson will begin her competition at 11:15 a.m. Thursday.

Gudmunson and Caturia’s state meet experience will begin at 10 a.m. with the 5K freestyle leg of the meet.

Caturia led Hastings at the section meet with a fourth-place finish. He had a time of 14:59 in the classic and 14:28 in the freestyle for a combined time of 29:26.

Patrick Acton of Eagan was the overall winner with a time of 27:47.

Gudmunson was eighth in 30:05.

Bobby Verchota placed 25th in 32:01.

Garrett Tuin was 32nd in 32:57.

Nick Johnson finished 49th in 36:31.

Jake Rabaey was 55th in 37:18.

Trevor Caflisch finished 60th in 38:57.

The Raider boys ended up placing fourth in the team standings with 335 points. Eagan won the meet with 375 points. Winona/Cotter was second with 359 and Lakeville South was third with 341.


The Hastings girls placed sixth out of 14 teams at the section meet with 298 points.

Eastview won the meet with 387 and Lakeville North was second with 355.
