Spring Valley High School teacher and River Falls resident Pat Houlton caught this large brown trout in a small creek near Spring Valley in late July.
Houlton, who is has been fly fishing in the Pierce County area for the past 15 years, said the brown trout was 29 inches long, had a 20-inch circumference and was 17 pounds. Houlton said his previously largest trout ever captured was 21 inches long.
After finding the trout in a smaller hole, Houlton figures it may have been washed into the small creek during flooding from the heavy rainfall early in July. He decided to get the trout mounted after he tried releasing it back into the water but “could tell it was probably not going to make it.”
Houlton lives in River Falls with his wife, Kellyn.
