The regular season is now over for the Hastings volleyball team. On Wednesday night, the Raiders closed out the year with a non-conference match against Woodbury. Results were not available at press time.
Hastings now turns its attention to the Section 3AAA tournament, which begins Tuesday. It’s unclear so far exactly where the Raiders will fall in the seedings. HHS is playing in a new section this year that figures to be very competitive. Included in Section 3AAA are Apple Valley, Cretin-Derham Hall, Eagan, East Ridge, Eastview, Henry Sibley, Park, Rosemount, Simley, South St. Paul and St. Paul Highland Park.
Hastings coach Rita Girgen is hoping the Raiders can end up right in the middle of the pack when it comes to seeds, but she knows those numbers will matter little when the tournament begins.
“Regardless, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter,” she said. “Whoever we are up against, we have to bring our A game. This is a tough section. There’s no easy way around any of it.
“We are certainly starting to put the pieces together. We’re getting closer and closer to having it all together for an entire match. Right now, I think we’re right where we want to be.”
Hastings recently traveled to a big tournament at St. Michael-Albertville, which featured 32 teams.
Hastings lost to Hutchinson and Elk River before beating Fosston and Centennial. The Raiders then lost to Buffalo.
By the end of the tournament, the Raiders were without the services of three regular starters.
“The girls that were on the bench that don’t always get to see a lot of varsity playing time really stepped up,” Girgen said.
Among those players who stepped up were Krystal Carlson, Josie Pechous, Tori Brake and Rachel Weber, Girgen said.
Haley Anderson also had a strong tournament.
“She is doing a fantastic job in the back row for us,” Girgen said. “She is consistent for us. She’s vocal and she’s super aggressive. She played really well over that weekend. She made some big plays for us that kept us in a lot of the matches.”
