Some unforced errors led to a slow start, but the Rosemount volleyball team eventually settled in and swept 11th-ranked (Class 2A) Southwest Christian in its season-opening match at the Breakdown, Side Out Showcase Saturday night at Hopkins High School.

Strong serving and defense helped the Irish overcome some early hitting mistakes in their 25-22, 25-14, 25-16 victory.

“I think some of that was nerves with the younger players,” Rosemount coach Smokey Vitek said. “We had three players that were hitting at the varsity level for the first time and several others with limited varsity experience.”

Senior Ashley Hanfeldt led the Irish with 12 kills in 18 tries. Mari Hinkle put down seven kills and Anna Wise and Abby Campbell slammed six apiece. Shae Buchman added five kills.

Senior Katie Lienemann led the defensive effort with 12 digs. Madi Mackinac was right behind with 10 digs and also received 21 serves without an error and hit three ace serves of her own. Hinkle added nine digs and Morgan Longhenry contributed seven.

The Irish (1-0) hosted Bloomington Jefferson Tuesday and are back at Irish Gym tonight to take on Roseville. South Suburban Conference play begins Sept. 13 at Lakeville North.
