The end of the regular season has come for the Rosemount Irish girls' tennis team and they will now start section play this week. Last week, the Irish beat Lakeville North, 4-3, on Tuesday but then fell to Eagan, 6-1, on Thursday. Rosemount earned the No. 6 seed in the section 3AA team playoffs and will play the winner of St. Paul Highland Park and St. Paul Central on Wednesday, Oct. 3 in Rosemount.
Rosemount swept all four singles matches against Lakeville North but dropped the three doubles matches. Senior Livia Leary won 6-3, 6-1 in No. 1 singles and sophomore Sonya Ramesh took No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-4. Senior Josie McCann won 6-3, 6-3 in No. 3 doubles while fellow senior Rachel Kearns won No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, the team of seniors Megan Larson and Lillie Rapp fell 1-6, 6-1, 4-6 in No. 1 doubles. Senior Julia Vitale and sophomore Hallie McCann lost No. 2 doubles 6-2, 6-2 and seniors Sidney Biebel and Alyssa Riphenberg were beaten in No. 3 doubles 6-0, 6-1.
The matches were played at the Lakeville Lifetime Fitness Tennis Center due to rain.
Matters did not go as well when the Irish hosted Eagan (ranked No. 10 in class AA) in their last match of their regular season. Rosemount's lone victory came from the No. 1 doubles team of Larson and Rapp who won 7-5, 6-4. In No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, Vitale and Hallie McCann fell 4-6, 6-3, 8-10 and Riphenberg and Biebel lost 6-2, 6-2.
Leary lost 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 singles, Ramesh fell in No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0, Josie McCann was edged out in No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-4 and in No. 4 singles Kearns lost 6-2, 6-1.
The winner of Rosemount's first-round sections match against either St. Paul Central or St. Paul Highland Park would go on to face No. 3-seeded Simley on Friday, Oct. 5 at Simley. The team semifinals would then be at Oct. 9 at East Ridge and then the section 3AA championship at Lakeville Lifetime Fitness on Oct. 11.
Individual sections matches will all be held at Lakeville Lifetime Fitness. Singles and doubles matches start on Oct. 12 and run through the Oct. 15. Kearns and Josie McCann will be playing singles for the Irish and the doubles teams are Rapp/Larson and Leary/Ramesh.
