The season came to a heartbreaking end for the Rosemount Irish girls' lacrosse team when they fell to Cretin-Derham Hall 12-11 in the Section 3A championship game on June 6. It was the second overtime game in two days during the playoffs for the Irish who beat Park the day before 9-8. Rosemount was the No. 4 seed in Section 3A and blew out No. 5 East Ridge 16-3 in the first round on May 31. They then traveled to Park-the No. 1 seed-on June 5 and dominated the first half before the Wolfpack came back in the second half to force overtime.
With the loss, Rosemount ends their 2019 campaign with a 9-7 overall record after going 7-6 during the regular season and 4-5 in the South Suburban Conference, which was good for sixth.
Despite a falling one game short of the state tournament, the future is bright for the Irish who return almost all of this year's team next season. Just four seniors have graduated-Valerie Carrico, Skylar Smith and captains Olivia Alberts and Lillie Rapp-and the team's top six point earners in freshmen Sayla Lotysz, Ava Whelan and Emma Duchscherer; and juniors Taylor Janssen, Delaney Smith and Larisa O'Neil.
Loss to Cretin
It seemed like a small form of deja vu for the Rosemount girls lacrosse team. The Irish went into an overtime game after holding a 6-2 lead over No. 1 seed Park the day before. Rosemount came out victorious with a 9-8 win to advance to the section finals.
For Thursday, it was a similar situation as Rosemount led 11-9 with a couple minutes left in the game. The Irish allowed No. 3 seed Cretin-Derham Hall to score two goals and the two teams went to overtime again. This time, though, the Raiders scored the winning goal and ended Rosemount's 2019 season for the Irish with a 12-11 final score.
It was a high-scoring game as Rosemount led 7-6 at the half. The Irish looked to many different attackers to keep pace with the back-and-forth game. The two teams exchanged goals for the first four goals as juniors Taylor Janssen and Delaney Smith scored the first two goals for the Irish. Then, freshmen Ava Whelan and Koral Hadac scored to make it a 4-2 lead for Rosemount.
Freshman Sayla Lotysz scored along with Whelan reaching a hat trick as the Irish led 7-6 at the half. There was a small delay to start the second half as the scoreboard went out, but that didn't stop Rosemount's rhythm.
The Irish came out firing scoring four goals. Smith, Whelan, Janssen and senior Valerie Carrico each scored for Rosemount in the second half giving the Irish an 11-9 lead with five minutes left in the game. Rosemount showed some strong defense until Cretin-Derham Hall scored its 10th goal with about two minutes left in the game. After the goal, the defense went back to stopping the Raiders on the offensive end.
It was looking strong for the Irish until Cretin-Derham Hall earned a whistle with about 10 seconds left in the game allowing its attacker a free shot to the Rosemount goalie. She connected and scored the game-tying goal to make it an 11-11 tie at the end of regulation.
Once again, overtime. It took most of the first overtime as the two teams battled defensively until Cretin-Derham Hall found an opening close to Rosemount's goal and connected to win the game.
