The Hudson River Rats did Sunday, July 28 what the River Falls Fighting Fish couldn't do the night before-beat the Prescott Pirates.

The 6-5 extra-inning win not only put the River Rats into the Wisconsin Baseball Association State Tournament, it gave the Fighting Fish their first outright St. Croix Valley Baseball League title since 2016.

Hudson improved to 10-7 in SCVBL play with one league game remaining-Thursday, July 31 at Spring Valley-ensuring they'll finish above .500 to qualify for the WBA postseason. The Rats were the only SCVBL team to reach the 8-team WBA finals last year.

Hudson's victory over Prescott also gave River Falls the outright SCVBL title with a record of 14-4. The Fighting Fish could have clinched the title with a win over Prescott Saturday night but the Pirates posted a 6-4 victory to move within one game of first place. River Falls lost again Sunday, 9-8, at Spring Valley, but the Rats extra-inning win over Prescott left the Pirates at 13-5 and one game short.

The 32-team WBA playoff field and matchups were determined after press time, Tuesday, July 30. WBA semifinal round sites include Altoona, Haugen, Spooner and Rib Lake and will be played the weekend of Aug. 9-11 with the final eight teams moving on to championship weekend Aug. 16-19 in Menomonie.
