It may have been Little League, but it was definitely high drama.
In Saturday's New Richmond Little League Minors championships game, the teams Derrick Companies and Bosch/Doboy battled into the bottom of the final inning before a champion was decided. Derrick Companies scored in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 3-2, locking up the 2008 tournament championship. The Derrick Companies team had also been the regular season champion in the Little League Minors season.
Derrick Companies was led by its two fourth graders, Andrew Hilby and Liam Mehls. Hilby was the winning pitcher, working the final three innings of the game after second grader Jake Jirik pitched the first three innings.
Mehls singled home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Bosch/Doboy team displayed a never-give-up mentality throughout the weekend tournament. Bosch/Doboy rallied to win an exciting game in eight innings on Friday night, by a 2-1 score. They also won in their final at-batin the semifinal round earlier on Saturday.
The championship game began Saturday afternoon, but the driving rainstorm forced the game to be postponed. It was restarted at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
Derrick Companies led 1-0 when the game was stopped and they added another run in thefourth inning. Bosch/Doboy put together another late game charge, tying the score with two runs in the fifth inning.
