The Hastings Hawks had their season end Sunday at Veterans Park as they were eliminated from the Section 1B playoffs by the Northfield Knights. The Hawks fell 10-0 in the elimination game after losing 16-4 on Friday in Northfield. Hastings finishes the season with a 4-26 overall record behind an increasingly younger roster.
The Hawks played Northfield tight for five innings on Friday as they took a 2-1 lead in the third and were up 4-1 heading into the top of the fifth. Manager Shawn Matson said that starter Jordan Jeske did a great job of throwing strikes but that it is difficult to keep a lineup as potent as Northfield's down. The Knights scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead and from there scored six more in the bottom of the sixth and five in the bottom of the seventh for the 10-run rule to take effect. Sunday saw Northfield chip away at Hastings, who was unable to mount much offensively, and win 10-0 in seven innings.
Check back later in the week for more comments from Matson on the season in general and the future of the Hawks.
