The Miesville Mudhens won their first-round game of the Class B state tournament Saturday, Aug. 17, over the Moorhead Mudcats 6-2 in Dassel. With the win, the Mudhens advance and the tournament is now double elimination. They face the Chaska Cubs on Saturday, Aug. 24, in Dassel.
The game was scoreless through the first four innings until both teams scored two runs in the fifth. In the sixth, Miesville went ahead 4-2 on a two-RBI double by Brian Sprout and never looked back. They scored insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings and the final score was 6-2.
Jacob Dickmeyer went eight innings and got the win on the mound for the Mudhens. He allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Chris Olean came in and pitched a perfect ninth with a strikeout for Miesville to close the door.
Sprout, Tanner Vavra and Dylan Blake led the team with two hits each, while the Miesville offense tallied a total of 11 hits. Sprout and Vavra each had two RBI apiece, while Blake and Deryk Marks had the other two. Blake also scored twice.
Should the Mudhens beat Chaska next Saturday, they would then play Friday, Aug. 30, in Dassel against the winner of the Victoria Vics and Dundas Dukes. If they lose, they would play Sunday, Aug. 25, against the loser of Victoria or Dundas. Last year, Miesville beat the Vics 13-3 during the second weekend of the tournament.
In other Section 1B action, Northfield beat Beaudreau’s 5-2 in the first round and will play defending champion Chanhassen on Friday. Meanwhile, the Dundas Dukes beat Coon Rapids 10-0 in eight innings and will face Victoria on Saturday and could run into Miesville.
In Class C, the Lake City Serpents beat Fort Ripley 7-5 and will play Fairmont on Saturday, Aug .24. The Red Wing Aces received a first-round bye and will face Avon on Sunday, Aug. 25, in Maple Lake. Avon beat Lake Henry 3-1.
