The WIAA girls basketball regional tournament brackets were decided upon in seeding meetings all over the state during the weekend.
New Richmond’s girls drew the fifth seed in the WIAA DIvision 2 seeding meeting that was held Sunday. The Tigers will open tournament play on Friday, Feb. 22, when they play at Tomah, which received the fourth seed.
New Richmond took an 11-8 record into the seeding, tied for fourth in the Middle Border Conference with a 6-6 record. Tomah has a 12-7 record. Tomah is currently fourth in the Mississippi Valley Conference with a 5-5 record.
New Richmond coach Chad Eggert appealed to get the fourth seed ahead of Tomah, but lost the appeal vote 5-4.
The winner of the New Richmond-Tomah likely will play at top seed Onalaska on Saturday, Feb. 23.
Somerset and St. Croix Central will play in the opening round of Division 3 tournament play on Tuesday, Feb. 19. Somerset received the eighth seed in Saturday’s seeding meeting and Central drew the ninth seed.
The winner of the Somerset-SCC game will advance to face Amery, the top seed in the region on Friday, Feb. 22.
This bracket had intrigue because of the three top teams at the top of the field. That included Amery (18-1) and Prescott (16-2), the MBC co-leaders, and Heart O’North Conference leader Bloomer (17-2). Amery received the top seed, the Prescott seeded second and Bloomer third.
